I’m patiently watching each beta release of Cataclysm to try to get a grasp on the direction of the Paladin. But it appears that Blizzard keeps changing it every time. One thing is for sure, the Paladin is getting reworked completely, yet again. Things that are for sure, it appears that Paladins will be receiving some racial specific mounts this time. Draenei and Tauren have their own version of the Charger. No more looking like Shrek riding Donkey! Seals and Judgement system looks to be overhauled again as well as the reduction to only 2 (count them: 2) blessings.

As far as the paladin changes go, we have made no secret that we haven’t happy with the paladin gameplay on live, of all three trees, and the class was headed for a pretty radical redesign. There can be very few sacred cows as part of that process or we’re not going to have the design space we need to fix the problems.

Today I thought I would talk about tools that can be used outside the game to make your time in-game more productive. If you’re like me, you don’t always have a lot of time set aside for raiding/farming/auction house, plus trying to study what you should be doing in the first place. So here are the tools I like to use when I’m not in-game.
First up, what loot do you want and where do you find it?
My Favorite: Kaliban’s Class Loot Lists
Kaliban’s is great for finding what drops from dungeons and raid bosses in an easy to understand format. He breaks down loot from raid bosses into primary and secondary priorities for each class.
So now that I know what drops are available, I like to use Wowhead’s Profiler to add these items to my character. Here you can search and import your current items into the profiler, then just right click the slot and perform searches for the items you discovered on Kaliban’s site. You can also add and change your gems and enchants here as well. If you create a free account with Wowhead, you can then save this as a custom profile that you can refer to later.
Next, if I’m not to sure about the gems and enchants or if the items I’ve chosen are really that great, I head on over to check it in Rawr. With Rawr, I can load my character from the Armory and make the changes to match what I did over on Wowhead. Then, under the Tools menu, I run the Optimizer. This will run a series of checks against the gear I have and suggest the optimal gemming and enchanting. When that’s done and I’m mostly satisfied with the results, I make changes (if necessary) back on my custom saved profile on Wowhead. So now when I’m in game, I know exactly which pieces I’m after and where to find them. This really saves time on loot distribution during a raid.
One other small reminder for while you are in-game, you can get the addon AtlasLoot Enhanced. AtlasLoot does sort of the same thing as Kaliban’s site, only it doesn’t break things down per class, it’s mostly just a listing of all possible drops from a particular boss. I like to use it for it’s Wishlist feature. You can add items from the general loot lists to your wishlist so that you can pull up a concise list of items you’re looking for, and know exactly which raid/boss it drops from. You can also create wishlists for different specs as well. Big time saver and reduces the need to alt+tab out to look at a website.
So in summary:
Happy loot hunting!

I hadn’t intended to be gone so long from posting, but I was actually working on some ideas for the upcoming expansion: Cataclysm. The beta recently began and with the NDA lifted, information has been pouring out about what has been seen in the new world. My intentions were to see what changes had been made to the Paladin in a practical way so that I might be able to represent what the future held for Prots and Rets out there. To say the least I was pretty disappointed at the changes made, which was barely anything at all. Then, in the midst of this, Blizzard drops this bomb yesterday:
Quote from Blizzard
One of the basic tenets of Blizzard game design is that of “concentrated coolness.” We’d rather have a simpler design with a lot of depth, than a complicated but shallow design. The goal for Cataclysm remains to remove a lot of the passive (or lame) talents, but we don’t think that’s possible with the current tree size. To resolve this, we’re reducing each tree to 31-point talents. With this reduction in tree size we need to make sure they’re being purchased along a similar leveling curve, and therefore will also be reducing the number of total talent points and the speed at which they’re awarded during the leveling process.
This means the whole system as it currently stands is being scrapped and rebuilt to a degree. We’ll be back to talent trees sizes similar to those in classic World of Warcraft. So on that note, I will have to postpone any theorycrafting on Cataclysm changes until those are revealed at a later time.
Update: I know that the 31 point talent trees were released yesterday and that some sites have preliminary calculators up. I did try a few build ideas, but alas I can’t really post anything because none of them are valid:

I’m going to regret saying this, but the paladin trees are the most changed in the game. There are only a few of the current beta talents that survived the, um, cleansing.

Last time I talked about gems, so the only thing really left is enchanting your gear. This provides some fun factor with the weapon enchants, but mostly this is yet another way to add stats to items.
Tanking Enchants
- Helm – Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector – This will require reputation with the Argent Crusade in order to purchase. Really no other options in this slot.
- Shoulders – Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle or Master’s Inscription of the Pinnacle (if you are a Scribe); otherwise when your defense is at high levels, this is an acceptable replacement Greater Inscription of the Gladiator.
- Cloak – Enchant Cloak – Major Agility for the all around stats (mitigation, avoidance, threat) or Enchant Cloak – Mighty Armor for pure mitigation at high gear levels.
- Chest – Enchant Chest – Greater Defense if you need to hit the defense minimum or Enchant Chest – Super Health for a good chunk of HP at higher gear levels.
- Wrist – Enchant Bracer – Major Defense if you are below defense minimum (old Burning Crusade enchant) or Enchant Bracer – Major Stamina. Leatherworkers get a bonus here with Fur Lining – Stamina.
- Gloves – This is one of the slots with a few choices, you could go Enchant Gloves – Major Agility for avoidance, mitigation, threat or pick up the leatherworking item Heavy Borean Armor Kit. Other options in this slot include, Hit, Expertise or Threat/Parry.
- Belt – This one is easy, an Eternal Belt Buckle.
- Legs – Find a leatherworker and get a Frosthide Leg Armor.
- Boots – Here you have pure stamina with Enchant Boots – Greater Fortitude or stamina and mobility with Enchant Boots – Tuskarr’s Vitality (unnecessary if you have Pursuit of Justice).
- Rings – Enchanters can add Enchant Ring – Stamina.
- Shield – A couple of options here are either defense Enchant Shield – Defense or stamina Enchant Shield – Major Stamina.
- Weapon – A much debated subject is which weapon enchant is best. The reason for this debate is that there really isn’t a best. There are a few that work better than others, but for the most part, this slot has the most room for variety. If you are low on hit then Enchant Weapon – Accuracy will help. If you prefer more defensive options, then Enchant Weapon – Exceptional Agility. Pseudo-effective health* option is Enchant Weapon – Blood Draining. I didn’t mention Mongoose or Blade Warding because of recent changes to the way Paladins’ chance on hit effects work. The changes have given chance on hit much smaller uptime and overall are less effective than the other enchants mentioned. *(Effective Health refers to items that grant you the equivalent of more health through alternative means).
DPS Enchants

Now that we have the stats out of the way, let’s have a look at the easiest upgrades to your existing gear: gems. It’s always good to re-evaluate your gems and enchants whenever you get an upgrade to your armor since they are the easiest way to shift stats around.
This guide is assuming that you know how gems and socket bonuses on gear work.
- Blue Gem sockets: For tanking, this is naturally where your stamina gems go. That being the case, the only real options are how much you can afford. If you are a jewelcrafter, you get to use Solid Dragon’s Eye in up to 3 sockets. If you aren’t, then your choices are either Solid Majestic Zircon or Solid Sky Sapphire. For DPS, you need at least 1 blue gem and for that I recommend Nightmare Tear.
- Red Gem sockets: Tanks have a few different choices here, but most are going to be hybrid gems. I recommend using this color for your avoidance + health hybrids with the top being Shifting Dreadstone. Agility (under the effect of Blessing of Kings) provides dodge near the same level as a pure dodge gem plus the additional armor and critical strike chance. Other options include Defender’s Dreadstone or Regal Dreadstone. Personal preference really, but Agility is better than Dodge which is better than Parry. For DPS, the only real choice here is Bold Cardinal Ruby or Bold Dragon’s Eye for jewelcrafters.
- Yellow Gem sockets: Another slot where hybrids yield more than pure colored gems. For tanks, Enduring Eye of Zul serves both the purposes of stamina and reaching your defense minimum. If you are early on in your gear set, another option is pure defense in Thick King’s Amber. Retribution has a few different options, but again they are really all hybrids, just depending on what stats you need. Viable gems are: Etched Ametrine or Inscribed Ametrine. Note: It’s still better to just gem pure strength in most cases unless the socket bonus is amazing.
- Meta Gem socket: For tanks, the top meta is Austere Earthsiege Diamond. If you are still early in your gear set, another decent option is Eternal Earthsiege Diamond as it helps meet the defense minimum and gives you that extra block value for mitigation. For DPS, the main choice is Relentless Earthsiege Diamond. This is another case where the agility is nearly as good as critical strike chance on Chaotic Skyflare Diamond, but the gem requirements for this meta can completely be handled by the Nightmare Tear.
And that pretty well sums up the gems needed to get you on the right track. As always, play around with what fits your play style. Next update I’ll cover enchants.
